nguages are taught in accordance with the generally accepted standards CEFA, the European Common Framework of Reference for Languages, is a well-known international standard for describing the process of language proficiency.
What is the CEFR standard?
The CEFR is a method used to describe how well you can understand and speak a foreign language. Several approaches have similar goals including the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages Framework (ACTFL), the Canadian Language Standards (CLB), and the Interagency Language Round Table (ILR) scale. Note that the CEFR standard is not linked to specific language tests.
The CEFR standard is a European standard that has been specifically designed to apply to any European language, so it can be used to describe your English language skills, German language skills, or other language skills and defines the standard.
Where did the CEFR standard come from?
The CEFR standard was established by the European Council in the 1990s as part of a larger effort to promote cooperation between language teachers in various European countries. The Council of Europe also aimed to assist employers and educational institutions who needed to assess candidates' language proficiency. The framework is designed for use in both teaching and assessment.
Rather than being linked to a specific test, the CEFR is a set of language ability statements that describe the tasks you would be able to perform using the foreign language at a given proficiency level.
For example: one of the B1 language ability statements includes “the ability to come up with simple, coherent text on topics that are familiar or of personal interest.” A teacher of any foreign language can use this language ability reporting data to assess you or design lessons that address the gaps in your knowledge of the language.
Why is the CEFR standard important?
In Europe, the CEFR is increasingly becoming the standard way to describe the level of proficiency in a foreign language, especially in academic settings. If you have studied more than one language, as most Europeans do, the CEFR is a convenient standard way to include two or more foreign languages on your resume.
Whether in schools or universities, CEFR has become the normative framework across Europe and can be used without reservation.
However, CEFR does not have the same level of understanding in corporate environments. So if you decide to use the CEFR standard on your CV for professional reasons, it is still a good idea to include a description of your language level, a standardized test score and examples where you have used your language skills (eg studying abroad, working abroad etc.).
How do I know my CEFR level?
The best way to find out your CEFR level is to take a well-designed standardized test. For the English language, the EF SET is the best choice because it is free online and is the first CEFR-compliant test. You need to set aside 50 minutes to complete the test and see your CEFR level.
To find out your CEFR level for other European languages, most common assessment tests are CEFR compliant. Depending on the required language, you will need to take a different test. Consult the official teaching body for the relevant language in Europe, for example: the French Cultural Association for the French language, the Cervantes Institute for the Spanish language, and the Goethe-Institut for the German language. It is not uncommon to use CEFR levels to describe your level in non-European languages.
